After having 2 kids in 2019 and 2021 I found myself not being able to sleep through the night. Which pardon my language” Sucked” since both my kids would sleep through the night. Sometime over 12hrs at a stretch. I asked my friends and even consulted my doctor. Everyone suggested take a melatonin. So I started taking it regularly before bed. However, after few weeks I started feeling more tired in the morning. I would feel dizziness and nausea almost every morning for few minutes. Specially on the days, I would have to wake up early or in the middle of the night, taking care of my toddlers, it got worse. I decided to give up melatonin. Having a background in nutrition, I went through whole body testing. My results showed I had Hypomagnesemia (Low Magnesium Level). Which was surprising since I vegetables and and grains.
5 MAIN REASON FOR LOW MAGNESIUM LEVELS
- Caffeine Intake – Does not matter if you drink tea or coffee or any other caffeinated beverage, it is the most leading cause on magnesium deficiency. Caffeine has a diuretic effect, meaning it forces our kidneys to release more water out of the body in the form of urine.
- High salt Intake – This increases the positive charged ions to (DCT), small segment of Nephron that regulates the electrolyte homeostasis. Which means, it maintains a balance of concentration of electrolytes around the cells so the cells can function properly.
- Unhealthy diet – Processed food and mostly all junk food lack to provide magnesium to our body. Foods like green leafy vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, whole grains and lentils.
- Alcohol – This is a known one, but often it is forgotten. Excessive alcohol intake can interfere with magnesium absorption. Excessive alcohol intake can interfere with magnesium absorption.
- Health Supplements – This will come as a surprise to some, but little known fact, supplements rich in Calcium, Iron, Zinc and Vitamin-D will interfere with the absorption of magnesium. That’s why I advise my clients to always consume magnesium supplements on its own and do not consume you multi-vitamin before or after 4 hours. I personally take it when I wake up, so I do-not have to worry about it all day.
CAN I CONSUME ENOUGH MAGNESIUM NATURALLY
In theory, yes that is possible. or to be honest was possible maybe 30-50 years ago. What we don’t realize is that since we are growing food at levels and volumes we have never before, the soil that we use is not as nutrient as before. I daily adult should consume around 400mg of Magnesium. To put that into prospective, it is equal to eating 1.5Lbs of spinach.
